After nearly five decades of staunch opposition to easing restrictions on U.S. travel to Cuba, the Republican party is beginning to warm to the idea.
Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona and Jerry Moran of Kansas have introduced a bipartisan bill entitled the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act, which has 51 co-sponsors to date. A similar bipartisan House measure introduced by Representative Mark Sanford of South Carolina has garnered 130 co-sponsors.
Critics of the embargo dismiss remaining resistance within the party, insisting that completely lifting the ban would bring economic and thereby human rights opportunities to the island. “We all want more democracy in Cuba,” said Flake. “They see it a little differently than I do, but they know this is the direction it’s going.”
